starting the conversation
find the source - use a feelings wheel to help your child point out the secondary emotion(s) - help them name it, moving it from abstract to tangible
validate their feelings - you may be tempted to tell them that is isn’t that bad in hopes they will dismiss it - however, the best thing you can do is to help your child feel fully safe and accepted
give them tools - help your child learn tolls that will help them calm down enough so the brain’s thinking center can come back online through the distress - remember, they are a human-being to be loved, not a problem to be fixed!
